Student Research: John F. Kennedy was elected as president in 1960 as the 35th President of the United States of America. Kennedy was the youngest man to take office. He was also the first Roman Catholic to be elected into office. Anti-Catholic prejudice was very stereotypical at the time JFK was elected as president. Only one other Catholic had ever been a presidential nomaniee in one of the major parties. JFK was a very wealthy, well educated, intelligent man who was known as a military hero. In office he supported the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Earlier before he was elected into office as the 35th president he successfully ran for Congress in 1946, and later ran for Senate in 1952. While in office Kennedy also led a renewal for Public Service. This was eventually was supported by the Federal Government for the growing of the Civil Rights Movement. On November 22, 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Texas as he rode through Dealey Plaza in an open motorcar, it was later identified that the gunman who killed him was named Lee Harvey Oswald; who was later fatally shot down by a man named Jack Ruby two days after Oswald had shot and killed John F. Kennedy. Kennedy's assassination sent major waves over shock all over the country. JFK became a heroic figure after his death. To this day many people say Kennedy he was the greatest president of all time.
Interviewee: I believe when John F. Kennedy was elected into office people were against his nomination because of his age and because he was the first Catholic president. His brother Joe Kennedy was supposed to be elected instead of John F. Kennedy. His time in office was not bad, people argue for him to be one of the greatest presidents to ever take office. When Kennedy was assassinated the nation was in complete dismay, the nation was shocked; nobody was expecting our president to be murdered. I believe that Kennedy was assassinated because he was against sending troops to Vietnam, he was more interested in sending a man to the moon. After Kennedy's death his Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson immediately sent our troops to Vietnam to fight in the Vietnam War. This shows that Lyndon viewed the war differently than Kennedy had. Lyndon thought it was very important to deploy our troops to help our allies fight against Vietnam.
